Why Are 10ft Shipping Containers More Expensive Than 20ft Containers?

At first glance, it doesn’t make much sense. A 10ft shipping container is half the size of a 20ft container, so surely it should be cheaper… right?

In reality, 10ft containers cost more than 20ft containers. Here’s a breakdown of why.

You can also view our container pricing here.

1. 10ft Containers Aren’t Mass-Produced

Most shipping containers are built to move freight around the world — and the global standard sizes are 20ft and 40ft.

10ft containers:

  • Are not commonly used in international shipping

  • Are produced in much smaller quantities

  • Are often custom-made or modified

Because they’re not mass-produced at scale, manufacturers can’t achieve the same cost efficiencies they do with 20ft containers. Fewer units produced = higher cost per unit.

2. Many 10ft Containers Start Life as Bigger Containers

In many cases, a 10ft container isn’t built from scratch — it’s cut down from a 20ft container.

That process involves:

  • Cutting and reinforcing the steel structure

  • Welding a new end wall

  • Re-aligning doors and seals

  • Repainting and re-certifying the container

This extra labour, materials, and time adds significant cost — even though the final container is smaller.

3. Labour & Transport Costs Are Similar Regardless of Size

One of the biggest misconceptions is that smaller automatically means it costs less to make and transport. In reality:

  • Handling a 10ft container requires the same equipment as a 20ft

  • Delivery still needs a hiab truck or crane

  • A 10ft container still takes up a space on a delivery run

  • Yard handling, compliance checks, and admin are virtually identical

So while you’re getting less steel, the operational costs are almost the same.

4. Higher Demand for Small Spaces

10ft containers are incredibly popular for:

  • Residential storage

  • Tight access sites

  • Urban backyards

  • Schools, councils, and small businesses

  • Short-term or relocatable storage

That demand often outstrips supply, especially in New Zealand — which naturally pushes prices up.

In contrast, 20ft and 40ft containers are more readily available, with a constant supply coming into the country so we can offer more competitive pricing on these ones.

 So… Is a 10ft Container Worth It?

In many cases — yes. A 10ft container is ideal if:

  • Space is limited

  • You don’t need full 20ft or 40ft capacity

  • Access is tight

  • You want a neat, compact storage solution

While the upfront cost may be higher than expected, you’re paying for convenience, flexibility, and practicality, not just the size.
